Is Shakespeare Necessary To Read In Hishschool?

In my opinion, I dont find it necessary to have to read Shakespeare in highschool english classes. It's difficult to understand the language, there are plenty of novels to read that you need to go into depth to in order to understand the story. Some people able to understand Shakespeare more than others which personally I find to be an unfair advantage compared to people that maybe need a book with more common language.

  1. I agree with your opinion that Shakespeare shouldn't be read in high school. I also agree that for many people it is hard to understand and that there are many ways that we can make connections and go in depth with without having to read it in a new language. I also think that there is no point of reading Shakespeare since we will never read it again outside of school and it won't help or be useful to us later on in life.

  2. Yes, I think that people have forgotten why we are reading Shakespeare because it seems like it's just become a useless tradition, but I think that Shakespeare's plays are filled with amazing imagery, metaphors, and other literary devices that you can't find so much of in modern literature. So, I think the quality of his writing is very high, and I think that, once you are capable of understanding it, it becomes quite interesting too. I think I'm getting better at understanding Shakespeare through reading Macbeth, but I go over the scenes 2 or 3 times each, reading it carefully, word-for-word, and I'm loving it so far. It's a breath of fresh air to read Shakespeare, and I think that his plays are fascinating.

    1. Alexandra, I love that you shared your strategy. It is so important to re-read scenes to ensure the full understanding or even a basic understanding.

  3. Cassidy, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Reading Shakespeare can be incredibly difficult and boring. I will admit that I hated reading Shakespeare in high school and university. I don't think that because some people have trouble with it is a reason not to study Shakespeare.

  4. I do not enjoy reading Shakespeare. Although I do not like it I believe that it is necessary to read, even though it can be difficult to understand and boring. Reading Shakespeares plays are a way to push yourself and allow yourself to think out side of the box therefore making you more well rounded.
