Money and Fortune

Throughout reading the play, I've noticed that one of the most obvious symbols is fortune. In this particular neighbourhood money seems to play a huge role. The characters all seem to get along fairly well now. However I cant help but think that eventually the money will drive them apart. Will the sisters share the money or will none of them win it? Or will one of them win it but run away with it all in the end? These questions circulate in the back of my head as I read. What do you think?

  1. i was wondering the same thing... like people tend to get greedy when they're given what they want.. i feel like it isnt going to have a good impact on the relationship between the characters

  2. I think Marie Adelle is gona win. I think she deserves to win because she is generous and the things she would do is feed the children in the reserve which really touches my heart <3

  3. I think this is a very interesting point. Throughout the play it is clear what each sister will do with the money if she is to win the prize, however they never talk about sharing or splitting the prize money equally. As the play develops we watch the sisters grow and come together to reach their common goal of getting to the biggest bingo, it would be interesting to see how they would act if one was to win the prize money. In my opinion I think the Rez Sisters would figure out a way to make it work so everyone was happy, the reason I think this is because at the end of the play (with one sister winning $600) all the ladies seem to be happy and adjusting well to being back on the reserve. Therefore this leads me to believe that the ladies would be able to work the situation out for the good of their friendship if one was to win the prize money.

  4. Cassidy, why do you think money will drive the sisters apart? What clues is Highway providing that makes you think this?

I agree that money plays a central role in the play. I wonder if the lack of money is the reason that it appears to be on the forefront of the sisters' minds.
