I feel that there is no issue with Halloween costumes. I feel that the reason that this Cowboys and Indians party caused such an issue because of the recent development with the "Idle no more" Movement. The attention that that has gained has caused people to realize that they can fight for something and with this new found power, they are willing to fight for anything. Sociologically, people will often go out of their way to fit in. By joining a cause that they once had no involvement with, these people feel that they have become a part of something and that they now have an obligation to stand up for that. There are, without doubt, issues with racism and the Native community has a large amount of struggles. But those struggles are not limited to the Native community.

Cody, I like how you made a connection to the "Idle No More" movement. Perhaps you can explain what the movement is and what its goals are.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is interesting that you discuss the role of social media in allowing people to find a cause and join in, even though they may lack an understanding.
You recognize that Native Canadians and other face racism. How do you decide what is racist or discriminatory and what is not? For example, I get the impression that you disagree with the protesters' objections to the costumes. Why aren't those costumes racist?
I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you are trying to say about how the idle no more movement gave people the advantage to fight about certain issues. I believe that if you feel strongly about an issue such as negative stereotypes for example in the article "cowboys and indians" theme party they fought the party to show how they were negatively stereotyping indian culture. I'm also confused again since you said that people took advantage over this idle no more movement and gave them a power, which is confusing because are you saying that people shouldn't have the right to fight for what they believe in?? Because if you do i totally disagree because you are saying that you can't stand up for what you belive in. Today if no one stood up or oraganized a cancer foundation then we wouldn't have had much research found and success as today, so are you saying that we can't fight for things such as cancer or any foundation to improve society? Because that is what it sounds like.
