Getting Your Licence

I'm sure as you all know at the age of 16 teenagers can write the test to get their G1.  Although in Alberta, teenagers only need to be 14.  G1 drivers in Alberta must be accompanied by a driver who has only had their full G for 2 years.  I have heard that this is because there is more agriculture so kids grow up driving tractors therefore are able to drive cars at younger ages.  Is this true and do you think it is fair that in Alberta you can get your G1 at the age of 14?  Also, why do you think that each province has different licensing regulations?

  1. I think that because in Ontario, we have bigger towns and cities than Alberta, so more population means more drivers. I think Ontario wants their drivers to have those two more years for experience and maturity, to make sure they have responsible drivers, because there are so many of them.

  2. I would say I have to agree with the law of being able to get their licence earlier because they do generally live a different lifestyle then we do. I have never heard of any crazy car accidents coming out of Alberta compared to Ontario, so it obviously isn't causing any problems. If all of a sudden there were huge problems with young drivers then I think it should be changed but as of right now it doesn't seem to be causing any problems. Interesting post! Never knew that about Alberta

  3. I think thats crazy! Ive never heard about that. I also heard that Ontario may be changing the legal age to 18. 14 and 18 is such huge age gap. The maturity levels between a 14 and 188 year old are so different. And you have to remember that if youre driving, you are in control of many others lives, and I dont think that a 14 year old should have that responsiblity.

  4. I wonder what percentage of Alberta's population is rural, and kids are actually driving tractors. Also, I would say that there is a big difference between driving a tractor in the field and driving a car on a highway or in a town. I say this with experience, as I began driving tractors on my farm at age nine and I found driving a car to be a completely different ball game.

Additionally, I think that it would be ridiculous for Ontario to increase the driving age. People are always saying that "kids these days" are coddled and don't want to grow up. Well, a law delaying the legal driving age will actually be a barrier to growing up.
